Why You Should Cats

For all of my life, I have loved cats.
I have found many people who don't like cats.
This is my introduction to why you should cats.

Reason 1:: Cats Are Cute

← Just look at this face! Isn't it so cute!
Cats naturally put themselves in places that make them super cute.
I get that some people may find them ugly, but some dog breeds are also ugly.

Reason 2:: There Are Many Breeds

Just like dogs, cats have many breeds that make them unique.
There are around 42-100 cat breeds^[1] in the world.
Here is three unique cat breeds

Siamese^[2]

These cats are an Asian breed of cat.

They are known for their almond shaped eyes, triangular-shaped head, large ears, point coloration ^[3]

The first Siamese cat wa depeicted in a collection of manuscripts called the Tamra Maew (The Cat-Book Poems). These poems are thought to originate from the Ayutthaya Kingdom in Thailand.

The pointed pattern seen on Siamese cats is a forms of partial albinism due to a mutation of an enzyme involved in melanin prodiction. The mutation is heat senstive and fails to work at normal body tempurtures. The result of this is the dark coloration in cooler parts of the body, which includes extremities and the face.

Scottish Fold^[4]

These cats have a gene mutation thats affects cartilage around in the body, causing the ears to "fold."

This gene mutation may create a cute look for these cats but in the end, Scottish Folds can develop degenerative joint diseases.

The Scottish Fold breed was established in 1961.

There are Scottish Folds that do not have the gene mutation called Scottish Straights.

Birman^[5]

These cats may look similar to a Siamese cat but they are fluffier. They also have "gloves" on each paw that are typically white.

There is no clear record of the breed's origin. They could be from Sweden, Franch, or Burma.

The Birman breed was almost wiped out during WWII. There were only two cats alive in Europe. Many Birmans were breeded with Persians but by the 1950's purebred Birman liters were being produced.

The most severe threat to Birman cats is a common heart disease seen in cats called Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). This disease results in heart failure, paralysis of the hind legs, and sudden death.

Reason 3:: They Each Have a Unique Personality

Many people do not like cats because cats are independent or cats seem to hate them. Cats usually just take a bit to warm up to people, just like some dogs do. I have two cats myself. One is very reserved and does not like to snuggle as much while all the other one does is beg for attention. Cats also do not like people in their face. Think about it: How do you like it when someone comes close to your face?
Personally, I like cats because they are super cute and put themselves into cute positions. I believe that dogs can be just as "independent" as cats are. One dog breed that comes to mind is the Shiba Inu. These dogs are infamous for doing what they want whenever they want to. They also are not lap dogs and require a lot of attention. For the most part, cats also hunt. This is helpful for when there is a mouse or even a fly in your living space.
